MICA’s SANKALP STAGES “PARTY”
Sankalp, the student run theatre society at Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad is all set to showcase its Annual Grand Production at Natrani amphitheatre this month. Sankalp is the biggest such initiative across all the B-Schools in the country.
Started in 2000, by two theatre-enthusiast MICAns, Sankalp has gone from being a ‘theatre society’, to becoming a way of life at MICA. Apart from the regular in-house plays, and recurring social-theatre initiatives every few weeks, Sankalp stages one grand production every year for the paying public in Ahmedabad and other cities. This final production is staged at Natrani amphitheatre, an heirloom of the renowned Sarabhai family, presently run by Mallika Sarabhai.
The evenings of November 25, 26 and 27 in Natrani will reverberate with Sankalp bringing alive, “Party” which is an adaptation of a play by Mahesh Elkunchwar. The play revolves around an upper-class party. As the party progresses, the relationships unfold to reveal the bitterness and the hollowness that people live with. Each character carries a story which clashes with that of the others and eventually reveals a dark reality. It scratches the surface to reveal the coldness and indifference that lies beneath the glitter and in the process, raises questions like- what are we running after in life, why are we unhappy with who we are and what we have accomplished and whether we have made any real difference to the world we live in. The final show, like every year, is an expression of the MICAns’ affection for the culture and heritage of the local city of Ahmedabad. We humbly welcome the theatre critics who have not missed a single Sankalp production till date!
Some of the renowned plays that have been staged by Sankalp in a decade of its existence are Girish Karnad’s ‘Tuglaq’, ‘Hayavadana’, ‘Sacrifice’, Vijay Tendulkar’s ‘Encounter in Umbugland’, Dharmavir Bharti’s ‘Suraj Ka Satwan Ghoda’, Woody Allen’s ‘Death’ and Mahesh Dattani’s “30 Days in September”. This student-run society also organises workshops in performing arts by inviting the who’s who working in this highly creative occupation. Coming January, the MICA campus will host the theatre festival “Mukhaute” – a melange of art, culture, performances and standing ovations.
The tickets for “Party” are available online with Book My Show and also at the Gulmohar Park Mall, Ahmedabad.
