Sankalp celebrates childrens’ day by raising awareness against Child Labour
Ahmedabad, 14 November: Sankalp, the theatre society of Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad (MICA), performed a street play at Gulmohar mall in the city on occasion of childrens’ day on 14th November, 2011.
The play, directed, scripted and acted-in by students of MICA, was meant to convey to the audience the importance of registering protest against child labour. The play brought out different places where one might encounter child labour, and encouraged the audiences to report it to the relevant authorities. At the end, the actors even gave to the audiences contact numbers where they could reach out in order to report child labour, and exhorted everyone to react and raise voice in order to eradicate child labour from the society.
The play was received very well by the audiences. The children, in particular, were moved by the instances depicted in the play, and vowed to ensure that other, lesser-privileged children did not have to suffer the horror of child labour.
Students involved in Sankalp believe that theatre is an effective mode of education and creating awareness. “Our attempt was to convey serious messages in a format which young children will enjoy and absorb easily, and the street plays worked beautifully as usual,” said Tanya Marwah, who heads the events team at Sankalp.
The event will be followed by Sankalp’s annual production at the Natarani auditorium in Ahmedabad, which will be staged on 26,27 November 2011. The play is the highlight of the year for Sankalp and Amdavadis alike, as it enters its 12th year of showcasing fabulous performances and unique scripts in front of the Ahmedabadi audience.
